Issue I Rozema Teunissen

‘We wanted to introduce the cinematic, virtual, surrealistic and the immaterial into everyday reality’

Rozema/Teunissen’s designs are part of a defining time in Dutch fashion. With their work, they have paved the way for generations but unfortunately until today, their heritage is not tangible, nor visible. The majority of their archive is analogue, put together way before the rise of social media and the internet.

With photography by Barrie Hullegie and an essay by fashion writer Renee van der Hoek.

Issue II Keupr/van Bentum

‘We strive to put things out of context’

The fashion designers of "The Dutch Wave" make remarkable and seemingly unavoidable use of this type of expression when describing their years as young, emerging designers. It is ironic that both of these rides do not provide any option to change direction or to pull on the brakes. After all, Michiel Keuper and Francisco van Benthum, the designers subject of this second issue of Monument, didn’t get on board to just sit back and take in the view.

With photography by Roos Quakernaat and an essay by fashion writer Laura Gardner.

Issue III Oscar Suleyman

"We felt like children, metaphorically; innocent and small, growing up in a fashion world we didn't know anything about."

The issue is dedicated to Oscar Suleyman, the designer duo with a taste for anything "chic". The focus is especially on the women that were part of the label; both as inspirations and as formative influences. Many intriguing fictional, historical and real-life muses are particularly striking. How were they embodied in the designer's work? Monument 3 is also a modest tribute to women, and a brief enquiry as how they play a role in a fashion design practice led by men.

With contempory photography by Woody Bios and Abel Minnée, and written contributions by Aïcha Abbadi and Tatjana Almuli.

About the brand

Monument is founded by Mary-Lou Berkulin and designed by Karen van de Kraats. The magazine focuses on Dutch fashion design around the turn of the century. Each issue is dedicated to a single designer or label, enabling the contributors to go in depth on the coming and passing of the designers who were part of the 1998 “Dutch wave”. It is the first publication to focus solely on these designers.
